珍珠巖是一種無毒、無味、不燃、不腐、耐酸堿、保溫隔熱、內(nèi)呈蜂窩狀結(jié)構(gòu)產(chǎn)品，是有酸性火山玻璃質(zhì)熔巖（珍珠巖）經(jīng)破碎，篩分至一定顆粒，再經(jīng)預(yù)熱，在1400℃以上高溫延時燒結(jié)而成的一種白色或淺色的優(yōu)質(zhì)絕熱保溫材料。它經(jīng)急劇冷卻而成的玻璃質(zhì)巖石，因其具有珍珠裂隙結(jié)構(gòu)而得名。珍珠巖礦包括珍珠巖，黑曜巖和松脂巖。三者的區(qū)別在于珍珠巖具有因冷凝作用形成的圓弧形裂紋，稱珍珠巖結(jié)構(gòu)，含水量2~6%；松脂巖具有獨(dú)特的松脂光澤，含水量6~10%；黑曜巖具有玻璃光澤與貝殼狀斷口，含水量一般小于2%。

珍珠巖主要用于建筑物屋面及墻體的保溫、隔熱；建筑材料的輕質(zhì)骨料；各種工業(yè)設(shè)備、管道絕熱層；各種深冷、冷庫工程的內(nèi)壁；農(nóng)業(yè)及園藝的無圖栽培、改良土壤，保水保肥等，被廣泛應(yīng)用于石油、化工、電力、建筑、冶金等行業(yè)。
